What is BPH?
BPH is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. It can press on the urethra and cause symptoms such as:
- Frequent urination, especially at night
- A weak or slow urine stream
- Difficulty starting to urinate
- The feeling that the bladder is not completely empty
- A sudden, urgent need to urinate
If these symptoms affect your sleep or daily activities, it is worth having them assessed by a urologist.
What is Rezūm water vapor therapy?
Rezūm is a minimally invasive treatment for BPH. The doctor passes a slim device through the urethra into the prostate and directs water vapor into the excess prostate tissue that causes urinary symptoms. After treatment the body gradually clears the treated tissue, which reduces the pressure on the urethra.
It is one of several treatment options for BPH, alongside medication and other procedures, including the laser surgery we also offer.
Who may be suitable?
Rezūm may suit some men with BPH symptoms. The decision depends on your symptoms, the size and shape of your prostate, your general health and your preferences. It is not suitable for everyone, and your doctor will advise after an examination whether Rezūm or another treatment is the best option for you.
How we assess you
- Your medical history and an examination of the urinary tract and prostate
- Urine tests and other tests as needed
- Ultrasound, urine flow measurement and urodynamic tests when required, many of which are done in the clinic
What can you expect after treatment?
Recovery varies from one patient to another. Temporary urinary symptoms may appear after the procedure, such as burning, frequent urination, or blood in the urine or semen, and a temporary urinary catheter may be needed. Symptoms usually improve gradually rather than straight away. Your doctor will explain what to expect in your case and the possible risks before you decide.
Frequently asked questions
Is Rezūm surgery?
It is a minimally invasive treatment delivered through the urethra, with no surgical incisions.
Will I need a catheter afterwards?
A temporary catheter may be needed after the procedure. Your doctor will tell you if you need one and for how long.
When do symptoms improve?
Improvement usually happens gradually rather than immediately after the procedure. Ask your doctor what to expect in your case.
Is Rezūm right for me?
That cannot be decided before an examination. Book a consultation so the doctor can assess your symptoms and recommend the most suitable option.
