Kidney and ureteral stones are among the most common urological problems. Some small stones pass on their own, while others need treatment. At Kuwaiti German Urology we assess and treat stone disease in Hawalli, Kuwait.
What are kidney stones?
Kidney stones are hard deposits of minerals and salts that form inside the kidneys. They can move into the ureter and cause pain or block the flow of urine. They range in size from tiny crystals to large stones.
Common symptoms
- Severe pain in the side or lower back, sometimes spreading to the abdomen and groin
- Pain or burning when urinating
- Blood in the urine
- Frequent or urgent need to urinate
- Nausea and vomiting
- Cloudy or foul-smelling urine
When do you need urgent care?
Go to the emergency department or see a doctor straight away if you have:
- Severe pain that painkillers do not relieve
- Fever or chills together with the pain
- Persistent vomiting
- Inability to urinate
How are stones diagnosed?
Diagnosis is based on a clinical examination, a urine test and an ultrasound scan, and additional imaging may be needed depending on the case. The doctor determines the size and position of the stone and decides on the right plan.
Treatment options
The choice depends on the size and position of the stone, your symptoms and your general health, and may include:
- Watchful waiting with plenty of fluids, pain relief and medication that helps the stone pass, for small stones and under medical supervision
- Shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL) to break up stones in suitable cases
- Ureteroscopy with laser to break up stones in the ureter or kidney
- Other procedures for large or complex stones, if your doctor considers them necessary
How can you reduce the risk of stones?
- Drink enough water throughout the day
- Reduce salt in your food
- Eat a balanced diet and limit excess animal protein and sugary drinks
- If you keep getting stones, have specialised tests and follow a personal prevention plan
