They range in size from tiny crystals to large stones.<\/p>\n<h2>Common symptoms<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Severe pain in the side or lower back, sometimes spreading to the abdomen and groin<\/li>\n<li>Pain or burning when urinating<\/li>\n<li>Blood in the urine<\/li>\n<li>Frequent or urgent need to urinate<\/li>\n<li>Nausea and vomiting<\/li>\n<li>Cloudy or foul-smelling urine<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>When do you need urgent care?<\/h2>\n<p>Go to the emergency department or see a doctor straight away if you have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Severe pain that painkillers do not relieve<\/li>\n<li>Fever or chills together with the pain<\/li>\n<li>Persistent vomiting<\/li>\n<li>Inability to urinate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How are stones diagnosed?<\/h2>\n<p>Diagnosis is based on a clinical examination, a urine test and an ultrasound scan, and additional imaging may be needed depending on the case.
